During the COVID-19 pandemic, companies across the state of Ohio and around the nation swiftly converted their operations to produce personal protective equipment, hand sanitizer, or other goods to help with the relief efforts. One company within the food manufacturing industry needed to convert a line within their plant from producing bulk containers to instead fill individually sized packets in order to supply needed items for a relief fund.
Despite the fact most businesses were shut down during quarantine, Alloy Fabricators, which specializes in CNC machining, was operating as an essential business. The food company that contacted Alloy didn’t just need the changeover done over the weekend, it needed the parts formed over a holiday weekend.
In the initial stage, our team lent engineering and design support, making modifications to the part drawing, after turning a prototype, to ensure the parts were fully operational. The rush job involved turning just five pieces of hard plastic, however each part was a unique design and shape, requiring individual set up and CNC machining. Each of the five parts required turning on the new lathe in the Alloy Fabricators machine shop, without which the company would not have been able to complete the request. The lathe, a Haas CNC lathe model ST-30Y, features three-axis tooling with a 30hp 3400 rpm spindle, for milling, drilling and tapping.
This engineering support and quick turnaround is common practice at Alloy Fabricators and the reason we can count so many loyal customers. One part of our service that clients might not be aware of is the fact that Alloy Fabricators’ employees can and often do, pay onsite visits to confirm measurements or finalize drawings.
The CNC machined parts were successfully measured, turned and delivered on Good Friday and the food processing plant was able to make a successful conversion. While these parts were a hardened plastic, we work most often with metals, including steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, brass and aluminum. In addition to the lathe, Alloy Fabricators offers complete CNC machining services, as well as punching, laser cutting, tube bending, welding, shearing, forming and powder coating, for a wide variety of industries.
