Improved Metal Fabricator: Precision and Quality Control

Adds New Coordinate Measuring Machine

As a metal fabricator and machined parts manufacturer, we are committed to delivering tighter tolerances and precision measurement for the highest standards in quality control. That’s why we recently added a dedicated climate-controlled quality control room equipped with a Mitutoya Apex model coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for pinpoint accuracy.

We selected a Mitutoya model due to its reputation in the industry for precision and quality control. A few of the capabilities enabled by the CMM:

  • Measure on four axes
  • Allows for part certification
  • Tight tolerance adherence
  • Greater precision of parts with complex geometry
  • Ease of replication within runs and when reordering
  • Reverse engineering

This particular model CMM is equipped with a large platform of 62” long x 35” wide x 23” height and can supply quality control on a wide range of size parts as well as those with complex geometry.

Reverse Engineering

One capability this machine allows is the ability it offers Alloy Fabricator’s staff to reverse engineer a part. In cases when an older part needs replication but specifications are uncertain or unavailable, the CMM can supply accurate measurement of parts from every angle, from simple to complex designs.

This aspect of reverse engineering also allows manufacturers to configure a new section or to conjoin two disparate parts created by different manufacturers. For example, one client had two different manufactured parts that needed to join together. Utilizing the CMM and its precise measuring capabilities, we created an adapter plate that allowed the two parts to work in synergy.

The frequency and type of quality inspections depend on customer requests or specifications. Some request a certain number of parts be inspected from every run, such as every tenth part. While others might have requests for every part or fewer points of inspection. The CMM does allow greater speed and precision when inspection policies are more stringent.

Alloy Fabricators offers a long history supplying metal fabricator services to the following industries, all of which benefit from the greater precision and tighter tolerances enabled by the CMM:

  • Custom aftermarket automotive (small to mid-range runs)
  • Agricultural machines and parts
  • Firearms industry
  • Alternative energy
  • Aerospace
  • Oil and Gas
